The world of marketing can seem intimidating when you are stating out. There are so many different acronyms you need to learn and depending on what niche you are planning to get into, a plethora of platforms that you may need to become familiar with. However, it doesn't need to feel overwhelming if you know what to look for.
Starting out, you want to become familiar with the marketing funnel. This is the different stages within the marketing process that guides customers through the buying journey. Websites such as Semrush and HubSpot offer fantastic articles that ellabortate the process from the top of the funnel (the awareness stage) to the bottom of the funnel (the loyalty stage).
Next, you will want to familiarize yourself with a few of the more commonly used marketing acronyms and terms. Terms such as CTA (Call to Action), CRM (Customer Relationship Management), ROI (Return on Investment), and KPI (Key Performance Indicator). This will help you going into meetings with both other managers and clients, allowing you to understand goals and objectives with specific campaigns. Additionally, this will help you to better understand data when reviewing it.
Finally, while there may be a data analyst on the team, it would be beneficial to familiarize yourself with certain formulas and how to read the analytical data that marketing campaigns produce. For example, when calculating the CTR (Click Through Rate) the formula would be as followed: (Clicks ÷ Impressions) × 100. This will ensure that you are able to not only understand if the campaign goals have been met based on the metrics that were outlined, but it also allows you to perform a function if there is not data analyst present on the team.
Overall, marketing does not require a formal education. It is a career field that can be broken into with personal research, on-the-job training, and practice over time. However, there are key points of knowledge that does give a person a leg up over others. At the end of the day, the most important factors to have within marketing are passion, creativity, and flexibility.
